With a memorable victory over last season’s winners Toulouse, Wasps overcame a Jacob Umaga red card to keep their Champions Cup ambitions alive.

When Francois Cros scored after just one minute, it appeared that victory was a foregone conclusion for a visiting side loaded with France stars. Wasps, on the other hand, rewrote the script by scoring twice, the first by Biyi Alo and the second by Brad Shields.

Wasps won despite Umaga collecting his second red card in as many months in the 33rd minute. After the break, Gopperth added two more penalties to the hosts’ lead, the second after Anthony Jelonch received a yellow card for a heavy tackle on Alfie Barbeary.

Peato Mauvaka’s goal halved Wasps’ lead to five points with 19 minutes remaining, adding to the pressure.

Wasps held on through pure tenacity, and man-of-the-match Barbeary’s 68th-minute try sealed an incredible victory and a place in the last 16 for next weekend.
