Australian Open: Novak Djokovic In Draw, Raducanu Plays Sloane Stephens

Novak Djokovic is still in the Australian Open draw, despite the fact that his stay in the country is still up in the air. Miomir Kecmanovic, a fellow Serb, has been paired against the nine-time champion. Emma Raducanu, the 2017 winner of the US Open, is seeded 17th against American world number 68 Sloane Stephens, the 2017 winner of the New York major.

The Australian Open, which begins on Monday at Melbourne Park, is the first Grand Slam of the 2022 season. The draw was scheduled for 3 p.m. local time (04:00 GMT) on Thursday, but it was postponed by one hour and 15 minutes.

When Djokovic landed in Australia last week, his visa was cancelled because he had not been vaccinated against Covid-19, and there were uncertainties about the vaccine exemption that would have allowed him to enter.

After ruling that border authorities had not followed due procedure, a court abruptly overturned the decision and ordered his release from an immigration detention hotel on Monday.

On Wednesday, Djokovic admitted to meeting a journalist from L’Equipe on December 18 despite knowing he had tested positive for Covid and that his immigration paperwork were incorrect.
