Arteta Praises 10-Man Arsenal As Gunners Frustrate Liverpool
After the 10-man Gunners frustrated Liverpool in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at Anfield, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta lauded his team’s “fight, determination, and camaraderie.”
After 24 minutes, Granit Xhaka was sent off for preventing a goal-scoring opportunity, catching Diogo Jota with a high challenge on the edge of his penalty area while attempting to cut away Andrew Robertson’s pass. Trent Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, was unable to further punish Arsenal from the subsequent free-kick, and the visitors produced a solid defensive showing to draw level.
Arsenal had the first attempt on target 71 minutes into the game, but Alisson smothered the England international’s shot at close range due to a poor first touch by Bukayo Saka.
“They never gave up even though it’s extremely difficult against this opponent,” said Arteta.
“I said to the players before the game that you have to have a certain attitude and in difficult moments you have to react – I think the boys did that very well,” he added.
The second leg is scheduled for next Thursday at 19:45 GMT at Emirates Stadium. After a 3-0 aggregate victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, the winner will meet Chelsea in the final at Wembley at the end of February.
