Ashes: England Dug Deep For Sydney Draw – Jonathan Agnew

Posted by

England will have considered a draw in the fourth Ashes Test in Sydney to be a success.
It doesn’t get much closer than being nine wickets down in the final over, with last man James Anderson being expected to survive.

Anderson, on the other hand, did survive, and it’s no minor achievement for England to stop the Australian juggernaut when the home team was chasing yet another 5-0 clean sweep.

Nobody is going to get carried away and pop the champagne corks. The Ashes are no longer in England’s hands after a 3-0 defeat.

Joe Root’s side, on the other hand, could have succumbed in the final two Tests, and they have dug deep to ensure that this is not the case.

For Anderson to have to shuffle out in the gloom, joining his old mate Stuart Broad, was brilliant drama that only Test cricket can provide.
