Liverpool’s plans for the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal have been further thrown into chaos after the club’s Kirkby training complex was forced to close.
The decision was made mere hours after it was revealed that Pep Lijnders, the club’s assistant manager, had tested positive for Covid-19, and that his scheduled news conference had been canceled. Due to Jurgen Klopp’s isolation, Lijnders would have been in charge of the game at the Emirates Stadium. He found out the results of his latest test late Tuesday night.
Following consultation with public health authorities regarding the surge in cases, the AXA Training Base has been closed for at least the next 48 hours.
‘Liverpool Football Club can confirm that the first-team training facilities at AXA Training Centre have been temporarily closed due to a fast escalating number of suspected positive COVID-19 cases,’ according to a statement released by the club.
‘The Reds took action today to put the facility’s operations on hold after the latest round of tests revealed many new probable positives.’
