Kieran Trippier: Newcastle Make Bid For Atletico Madrid Defender

Newcastle United have submitted an offer to Atletico Madrid for England right-back Kieran Trippier.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is in the process of making his first signing in the January transfer window.

Since arriving for £20 million from Tottenham in 2019, Trippier has made 83 appearances for the Spanish club.

During his tenure as Burnley manager, Howe worked with Trippier, signing him after a loan spell from Manchester City in 2012.

Trippier has shown an interest in returning to the Premier League and was courted by Manchester United and Arsenal last summer, but neither club could match Atletico’s £51 million asking price.

Trippier, who played for England in the Euro 2020 final last summer, assisted Atletico Madrid in winning La Liga last season.

Newcastle are now in 19th place in the Premier League, having conceded 42 goals this season, which is the joint-highest total in the league.

Newcastle’s match against Southampton on Sunday has been postponed because to Covid-19 instances and injuries in the team.
