The National Football League (NFL) announced that legendary American football coach and broadcaster John Madden died at the age of 85.
He died abruptly, according to the league, and no cause was given.
After resigning from coaching, Madden became a very popular television analyst after leading the Oakland Raiders to their first Super Bowl triumph in 1977.
Later, he became the face of one of the most popular sports video games of all time, Madden NFL Football.
“Nobody loved football more than Coach,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.
“There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today.”
