Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell will likely miss the remainder of the season after undergoing knee surgery, according to the club.
On November 23, the England left-back, 25, suffered anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) damage in Chelsea’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Juventus.
Chelsea initially opted to start rehabilitation therapy on the defender in the hopes of avoiding surgery.
In six Premier League games this season, he has three goals and one assist.
Chilwell had a partial ACL injury, according to an early scan, and Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel indicated at the time that “the following six weeks will tell the story” on whether he would need surgery.
“Unfortunately, Ben was unable to improve, and thus collectively the decision has been made to proceed this week with a surgical repair,” the club stated in a statement.
