England’s Ashes defeat in Melbourne was “gut-wrenching,” according to Joe Root, as Australia reclaimed the urn with a crushing innings-and-14-run triumph.
On the third day of the third Test, England were bowled for 68 runs, handing Australia an easy victory.
After only 12 days of cricket in the five-match series, Australia has reclaimed the Ashes.
Root stated, “It’s everything you don’t want from this stage of the tour.”
After resuming on 31-4, England lost their final six wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground before the lunch break.
As England capitulated, debutant Scott Boland concluded with figures of 6-7, with the last five wickets falling in the space of 30 balls.
“It is bitterly disappointing and gut-wrenching. We have been thoroughly outplayed,” Root, who top-scored with 28, told BT Sport.
