In English football, it’s a favorable omen. If your team is at the top of the standings when you eat your Christmas turkey, you have a high probability of winning the Premier League the following summer.
Since the modern form of the top flight began in 1992, it has happened in 15 of the last 30 seasons – but not every team is able to keep their stranglehold on the league title after surging to the top halfway through the season.
Manchester City currently leads the table with 44 points as we approach Christmas Day, the first time they’ve done so since 2018, following three years of Liverpool dominating the rankings.
