Moussa Dembele of Lyon is being considered by Newcastle United. Last season, the 25-year-old spent time on loan at Atletico Madrid after the two clubs agreed on a £1.2 million loan fee with a £30 million transfer option.
However, Atletico failed to exercise their option since Covid and injuries had hampered Dembele’s season. Instead, the Spanish club attempted to sign Dembele on a second loan, but Lyon refused.
He started the French season well, scoring four goals in five games before suffering a thigh injury and a right fibula fracture. He has recently returned to Lyon’s squad, although the French club is willing to trade if a reasonable offer is made.
Newcastle has been putting together a list of young strikers, but Dembele, a former Celtic and Fulham front, has plenty of top-flight experience.
Some of Newcastle’s targets are being put off by the possibility of relegation, and they may try to secure another loan with the intention of making a permanent move.
They are seeking moves for Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier and Lille’s Sven Botman, but they may have to settle for more realistic targets in January.
