Gareth Southgate was named Coach of the Year and England Men’s Team of the Year during the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year program.
Southgate led England to the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium, where they were defeated by Italy on penalties.
England’s appearance in the final, however, marked the end of a 55-year wait for a major final since their 1966 World Cup success. Southgate, 51, is a two-time recipient of the Coach of the Year award, having previously won it in 2018.
Who were the winners at Sports Personality of the Year 2021?
The last time England’s men won Team of the Year was in 1966. Southgate has been the manager of England since September 2016, and he just signed a new deal that runs through December 2024.
He took over as caretaker manager from Sam Allardyce for two months before being promoted permanently.
