Chelsea squandered a chance to close the gap on Premier League leaders Manchester City to two points with a brilliant point at Stamford Bridge from a depleted Everton team.
Mason Mount, an England midfielder, gave the hosts a merited lead in the 70th minute, finishing calmly past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after Reece James’ assist.
Everton leveled four minutes later when 19-year-old defender Jarrad Branthwaite converted Anthony Gordon’s free-kick at the back post in his first league game of the season.
Thiago Silva had an opportunity to win it for the hosts, but Pickford stopped his powerful header brilliantly.
The England international had previously saved efforts from Christian Pulisic, James, Jorginho, and three Mount shots while the game was scoreless.
“Jordan Pickford made some good saves, it is important to have a good goalkeeper,” Everton boss Rafael Benitez said.
“Obviously, it is difficult to get points here but … we did it with so many senior players not available and players on the bench still with some issues.”
