Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl criticized Alex McCarthy for his team’s 1-1 draw with Brighton, claiming the goalkeeper neglected to declare an injury.
After the ball was floated into the box following a blocked free-kick, Neal Maupay equalized for the Seagulls in the 98th minute.
If Hasenhuttl had known the depth of McCarthy’s hamstring injury, he would have substituted him for the set-piece.
James Ward-Prowse was instrumental in getting Maupay onside, with Hasenhuttl claiming that his skipper ran back to defend McCarthy’s left-hand post from Jakub Moder’s free-kick because the goalkeeper worried he wasn’t mobile enough to cover the entire goal.
“If you have a goalkeeper that is not 100% fit in that moment and cannot jump and then you send someone back into the line, then the rebound that comes out is normally offside,” the Saints boss added.
