Ajaz Patel of New Zealand became only the third bowler in Test history to take ten wickets in a single innings, but India took command of the second Test.
As India were bowled out for 325 in Mumbai, the left-arm spinner added six wickets to the four he took on day one to finish with 10-119.
The only other players to accomplish this feat are Jim Laker and Anil Kumble.
In response, New Zealand were bowled out for 62, giving India a 332-run lead at the end of day two.
After India came within one wicket of forcing victory in the first Test, the two-match series is now tied at 0-0.
