Chelsea were “fortunate” to stay atop the Premier League table after surviving a scare at Watford, according to manager Thomas Tuchel.

After Hornets forward Emmanuel Dennis had cancelled out Mason Mount’s opener, the Blues needed a goal from substitute Hakim Ziyech to beat their hosts.

Chelsea would have slid to third if they had drew, with championship contenders Manchester City and Liverpool both winning, but Ziyech ensured they remained in first place.

“We were not ready for this game,” said Tuchel.
“We are to blame. We never found the right attitude. We were very lucky to escape with the win.”

When England midfielder Mount broke the deadlock with a first-time finish at the end of a wonderful play involving Marcos Alonso and Kai Havertz, Watford had twice come close to grabbing the lead.

After Ruben Loftus-Cheek misplaced the ball, Moussa Sissoko set up Dennis, who scored with a shot that deflected off Antonio Rudiger. Mount, who had already scored his team’s first goal, then set up the winner by passing to Ziyech, who fired past Daniel Bachmann.

Chelsea maintained their one-point lead at the top of the Premier League table with their fifth consecutive away win. The game was stopped with the score at 0-0 for 32 minutes as a supporter in the stands was stabilized after suffering cardiac arrest.
