Real Madrid beat Athletic Bilbao 1-0, extending their lead at the top of La Liga to seven points. Karim Benzema scored the game’s only goal. Five minutes before halftime, the France international redirected Luka Modric’s errant attempt into his own net for his 17th goal of the season.
The visitors pressed late on but were unable to score an equalizer, and they stay in eighth place after six games without a win.
Real Madrid’s lead over defending champions Atletico Madrid has grown. Carlo Ancelotti’s team dominated for long stretches, with 62 percent possession and 17 shots on target.
After Modric twisted a shot into his path after Unai Simon parried Marco Asensio’s effort, they made the breakthrough when Benzema turned home from 10 yards for his 12th league goal of the season.
Benzema has now scored 35 goals in 46 games for Real in all competitions in 2021, matching his best goalscoring tally for the club in a single calendar year in 2019.
Mikel Vesga was twice denied by superb Real blocks, while late chances from Yeray and Oier Zarraga both fell short.
