Despite Novak Djokovic’s quest for a record 21st grand slam championship, Australian Open director Craig Tiley expects up to 95 percent of players will get vaccinated against Covid-19 in time for the January competition. Tiley said Victoria’s rigorous vaccination rule had prompted players to get their vaccinations before heading to Melbourne Park, where unvaccinated fans and personnel will be barred.
Tiley also revealed that he spoke with Djokovic, the Australian Open men’s winner, but that he was unaware of the Serbian’s vaccination status. When asked about defending his Australian Open title at the ATP Finals, Djokovic refuses to reveal his current situation, claiming that it is a matter of personal decision.
“Novak has won nine Australian Opens, I’m sure he wants to get to 10,” Tiley said. “He’s on 20 grand slam titles as is Rafa Nadal, who is coming, and Roger Federer. One of them is going to surpass the other and I don’t think Novak would want to leave that feat to someone else.”
