‘There’s A Lot Of Work Still To Do’-Gerrad’s Villa Secure Impressive Win At Palace

After securing his second win as manager with a 2-1 victory over Patrick Vieira’s Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, Steven Gerrard believes Aston Villa still have potential for growth.

After passionately celebrating his first three points as Villa manager late in the game against Brighton a week ago, the former Liverpool captain was ecstatic when Matt Targett put Villa ahead on 15 minutes with a low drive through a mass of bodies from Ashley Young’s corner.

John McGinn curled a magnificent shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to double the visitors’ advantage against the run of play as Palace tried to salvage something in the final seconds of the second half.

Palace managed to snatch a late consolation through Marc Guehi in injury time but it was not enough to deny Villa. “Our first-half performance was excellent,” said Gerrard, who replaced Dean Smith as Villa manager earlier this month.

“I thought in a lot of departments we were top but we knew we would have to roll our sleeves up in the second half because Patrick would make changes. It was a fantastic away performance and I’m really pleased to have six points from six so far.
