Arsenal are still waiting to see if Nicolas Pépé will deliver on his £72 million transfer fee, but Mikel Arteta believes the out-of-favour forward will perform during the remainder of his deal.
Pépé was expected to have a strong start this season after a spectacular finish in 2020-21, scoring five goals in the club’s final three games, but he has not been able to reproduce that success. The Ivorian has only appeared in five minutes of Arsenal’s last four Premier League games, starting only one of their last seven, and has failed to break his league duck. It means that since his arrival from Lille in August 2019, the overall picture has been one of disappointing inconsistency; Arteta noted that judging Pépé’s worth would take time, and that the team’s overall performance would be a factor.
Asked whether Pépé had given value for money, he said: “We will see in the next few seasons if he is capable of achieving what we expect from him. But that is a difficult answer, not only with him but with any player.
