Liverpool’s quick start saw them sail to an easy victory and move up to second in the Premier League table thanks to Diogo Jota’s first Anfield brace.
Jota, who was filling in for the injured Roberto Firmino, scored in the second minute and added another after half an hour, before Thiago Alcantara and Virgil van Dijk sealed the victory.
Only two of the Portuguese forward’s previous Reds doubles had come in away games against Atalanta and Arsenal.
Southampton were so outclassed that they were relieved it didn’t add up to the 9-0 thrashings they’d received under Ralph Hasenhuttl against Leicester and Manchester United.
Jurgen Klopp sought a quick start from his team, and Jota had a shot blocked by Tino Livramento in the first minute before putting Liverpool ahead after only 111 seconds.
