Liverpool Go Second With Big Win Over Saints

Liverpool thrashed Southampton 4-0 to move up to second in the Premier League, one point behind leaders Chelsea. Diogo Jota scored twice.

Southampton came to Anfield with the intention of attacking the Reds, but were punished after less than two minutes as Andrew Robertson was allowed to break down the flank and cross for Jota to poke in.

Liverpool continued to attack, with Sadio Mane heading wide before having a goal disallowed for a slight offside.

The Reds weren’t finished yet, as a third goal came just a few minutes later when the visitors failed to clear their lines effectively, and Thiago Alcantara punished them with his second goal in as many games.

The half-time break brought only a brief reprieve, as Virgil van Dijk scored from a corner to make it 4-0 only minutes after the restart.

Midway through the second half, Jota came close to completing his hat-trick but stabbed just wide as Southampton limited the damage to four goals when it could have been much worse.
