Arsenal Too Good For Howe’s Newcastle

Howe, back in the Magpies’ dugout after missing last weekend’s 3-3 draw with Brentford due to Covid, put together a team to contain Arsenal and claw out a point.

Until Bukayo Saka scored home from Nuno Tavares’ through pass in the second half, it appeared that the tactic was working. Saka was replaced by Gabriel Martinelli, who scored with his first touch, a beautiful volley from Takehiro Tomiyasu’s clipped feed over the top.

“He wasn’t comfortable. He felt something,” said Gunners boss Mikel Arteta of Saka as they await news of what is wrong with the England international.

In an otherwise lackluster first half, both teams had hit the woodwork. Aaron Ramsdale tipped Jonjo Shelvey’s long-range effort onto the bar, then Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang smacked a sitter off the post from six yards out.

With just over a third of the season gone, Arsenal are still in fifth place in the Premier League, while Newcastle are five points adrift of safety.
