West Ham advanced to the Europa League last 16 with a win over Rapid Vienna in an Austrian encounter played behind closed doors.
With a game to spare, David Moyes’ side is already certain to win Group H.
In 1965, the Hammers won the European Cup Winners’ Cup, but they lost in the final in 1976. Their performance in the Europa League this season is already their best in European play since 1980-81.
“A really nice, professional job, not only tonight, but how we’ve done in the group, and tremendous credit to the whole team,” manager Moyes told BT Sport. We’ve utilized them all and taken some risks along the way, but it’s all worked out in the end.
“At the start of the tournament I was unsure how it would be. It was relatively new to the players, but they’ve done such a great job.
“We thoroughly deserve to win the group and are looking forward to European football in March – and don’t have to play in February which helps with the congestion.”
