Morelos Brace Sends Rangers Through In Van’s First Game In Charge

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first win as Rangers manager came thanks to a brace from Alfredo Morelos, who helped his side advance to the Europa League knockout phase at the cost of Sparta Prague.

Morelos scored early in the first half to put Rangers in command, before capitalizing on a weird mistake by Sparta’s Filip Panak in the second half.

Rangers will finish second in Group A due to their superior head-to-head record against Sparta and Brondby’s loss against Lyon.

The Scottish champions will play one of eight teams that will be eliminated from the Champions League over two legs in February for a spot in the Europa League’s last 16, with their last group game against section winners Lyon on December 9 practically meaningless.

Following Steven Gerrard’s departure to Aston Villa, Van Bronckhorst made his first appearance as the new Rangers manager and relished watching his team win comfortably.
