In a shocking case that has shocked French football, Real Madrid star Karim Benzema was found guilty of plotting to blackmail his former teammate Mathieu Valbuena with a sex film.
The striker received a one-year suspended sentence and a €75,000 (£63,000) punishment from the judge this morning, which was tougher than the prosecutors’ request.
The France international was one of five people on trial in Versailles, near Paris, in 2015 for attempting to extort money from Valbuena using a sexually graphic film seized from his phone.
When Benzema approached him about the sex tape at the French team’s training center in October 2015, he said he was merely attempting to help his fellow player and promised him he could help him find someone to’manage’ the issue of the film.
Prosecutors had urged that Benzema, who was not present during the court proceedings, be given a 10-month suspended sentence and a €75,000 fine when the trial finished last month.
