Robert Pires has urged Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to buy another defender in the January transfer window, as well as additional English players.
The north Londoners spent about £150 million during the summer transfer window, more than any other Premier League team, with centre-back Ben White costing £50 million and full-backs Takehiro Tomiyasu and Nuno Tavares costing £28 million each.
Former Arsenal winger Pires believes that another defender is required, rather than a center midfielder, despite an impending problem in that position due to players departing for the Africa Cup of Nations this winter, and that English players assist form the team’s foundation.
‘It’s difficult, but if Arsenal can spend money in January, maybe on a defender, because I think our midfield and forwards are really good players,’ Pires added.
