Following Cristiano Ronaldo’s damaging cameo against his current club in 2003, Phil Neville said that the superstar owes him for assisting him in securing his move to Manchester United.
Neville recalled to Sky Sports how the mercurial attacker defeated him on several occasions in a successful audition during a pre-season friendly between United and Sporting Lisbon, then Ronaldo’s squad.
Sir Alex Ferguson rushed to sign Ronaldo after the game, and a number of dizzy Red Devils players pleaded with their manager to sign the youngster.
‘I believe Cristiano’s got to thank me a lot you know because I played in that game at Sporting Lisbon when he kept dancing past me down that wing,’ Neville said, describing how Ronaldo humiliating him helped spark the now 36-year-incredible old’s career.
