Owen Farrell is a doubt for the start of the Six Nations after it was revealed that the England skipper needs ankle surgery. He limped out of his 100th Test match against Australia last Saturday and is expected to be away for up to 12 weeks following surgery on Friday.
It means Farrell will miss England’s Six Nations opener against Scotland on 5 February – 11 weeks from now – when Eddie Jones’ side looks to revenge last year’s 11-6 Twickenham humiliation. Farrell’s absence would also deprive Jones of his prominent captain as England seeks to avenge their fifth-place finish in the 2021 Six Nations. It would also put Ice Farrell’s fledgling 10-12 partnership with Marcus Smith.
