Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been named the new manager of Rangers, succeeding Steven Gerrard, who played for the club from 1998 to 2001.
Since quitting his role as head coach of Guangzhou City in China last December, the former Netherlands international has been unemployed. From 2015 to 2019, he led Feyenoord to two Dutch Cup victories and the club’s first Eredivisie title in 18 years.
After initial talks in London, Van Bronckhorst met Rangers officials in Amsterdam this week. He won 106 caps during a highly successful playing career that included spells at Arsenal and Barcelona. The club stated that the deal was contingent on obtaining a work visa.
“I am absolutely delighted to be returning to Rangers as the club’s new manager,” Van Bronckhorst said. “I feel so lucky to be going to work with a squad which is in a great position on all fronts and largely has that experience of being winners … I cannot wait to meet the club’s incredible supporters again and begin this new era for us all.”
