England is preparing for the repeat of the World Cup final against South Africa on Saturday without captain Owen Farrell and with a front-row dilemma after Eddie Jones suffered a double injury on Monday.
Jones is missing his chief lieutenant and a severely depleted front-row, with South Africa bringing their fearsome “Bomb Squad” to Twickenham.
After suffering injuries in last weekend’s 32-15 triumph over Australia, both players are scheduled to see specialists this week, with Farrell staggering off in great discomfort in the second half. The latest setback comes after the 30-year-old was forced to isolate and miss the victory against Tonga earlier this month.
Jones is expected to revert to a center pairing of Manu Tuilagi and Henry Slade, with Marcus Smith staying at fly-half, although Farrell’s impact on the team will be felt greatly. It will be only the 10th match of Jones’s tenure in which Farrell does not play, and without him, Courtney Lawes, who has taken over as captain, is the favorite to lead the team against Tonga.
