Ireland Report ‘Potential Positive’ Covid-19 Result Before New Zealand Clash

Before Saturday’s fall international against New Zealand in Dublin, Ireland has reported a possible positive case of coronavirus. According to a statement made by the Irish Rugby Football Union, more testing will be done to see if the result was a false positive.

Back-up players have been put on standby, according to Ireland defense coach Simon Easterby, but no one had been declared out of the game as of Friday afternoon. All members of the squad and management team have been subjected to extra lateral flow and PCR testing, and no one has yet been identified as having tested positive.

“We’ve retested today and the important thing is we get clarity,” Easterby said. “As you know where you can have false positives, we have to make sure we give those guys an opportunity, give the respect to them, and it’s important we allow that process to happen.

“There’s a bit of clarity needed about the players who didn’t make [the captain’s] run, but hopefully in the next couple of hours we’ll have that and we can look forward to tomorrow and put today behind us,” Easterby added. “We’re not the only team across the last couple of weeks who’ve had to deal with Covid issues the important thing is we stay focused.”
