Sweden’s chances of qualifying for the World Cup championships in Qatar were dealt a significant blow on Thursday when they lost 2-0 to Georgia in Group B.
Sweden still leads the group with 15 points, but a win in Greece later on Thursday might see Spain pass them. On Sunday, Spain will face Sweden in the final qualifier.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic returned to the Sweden team after missing Euro 2020 due to a knee injury, but even the presence of their all-time leading scorer couldn’t save them from an embarassing defeat.
The Swedes had 15 shots on target, including gilt-edged chances for Alexander Isak and Viktor Claesson, but it was the hosts who took the lead in the 61st minute through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who added a second 16 minutes later to seal a famous triumph.
