Newcastle director Amanda Staveley is “looking forward” to removing the Sports Direct branding associated to unpopular former owner Mike Ashley when a temporary prohibition on owner-related sponsorship deals expires in a fortnight.
Last month, 18 Premier League clubs approved a proposal to temporarily halt any new transactions with Newcastle’s Saudi Arabian ownership, which Staveley claimed had come as a “shock” and had taken a significant toll on the club.
Staveley is part of an eight-club Premier League working group examining long-term restrictions for related-party sponsorship deals, with the goal of ensuring that any contracts reached reflect fair market value.
