“He is standing out every single match.” Before the weekend’s action, whatever reservations Chelsea fans had about Thomas Tuchel keeping an eye on Conor Gallagher during his loan term at Crystal Palace were dispelled. Gallagher repaid the compliments with a man-of-the-match performance in Crystal Palace’s 2-0 win over Wolves on Saturday, in which he scored his fourth league goal of the season, more than any other Chelsea player.
Tuchel would have been impressed by the 21-year-all-action old’s display against Wolves if he hadn’t been watching his team draw 1-1 with Burnley. Gallagher also had four goalscoring chances, four tackles, and two interceptions to go along with his goal. For a central midfielder, that was the ultimate performance.
Chelsea has a history of snatching up young players, loaning them out to improve their reputations, and then selling them for a profit, but the club appears hesitant to move Gallagher so quickly. In the summer, Chelsea decided to cash in on Marc Guéhi, sending the youthful centre-back to Crystal Palace for £18 million. With Gallagh, however, they’ve adopted a different strategy, suggesting he could still have a future at his parent club
