‘We’re The No 1 Club In Manchester – And Probably The World’: Ole Gunnar Stokes The Fires Of Rivalry

Before Saturday’s Old Trafford derby, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer inflamed the rivalry by declaring: “We’re the No. 1 club in Manchester – and perhaps the world.”

Manchester United has slipped behind Manchester City in the Premier League during the last decade, winning only one title to Manchester City’s five. ‘No, I can’t see City ever eclipsing United,’ Solskjaer said when asked if he could ever see City overtaking United.

The point is, you have to admire what they’ve accomplished in the last ten years — perhaps even more so in the last four or five, given their dominance in England and Europe. But, because we are Manchester United, we will always come back. I believe we are the best club in Manchester, and by extension, the world.’

United will take on City in the 186th Manchester derby, hoping to draw level with Pep Guardiola’s side in the Premier League rankings.

‘We’ve got the flack and deserved it because it was nowhere near good enough on many levels, and now we have to play another very talented club,’ Solskjaer said of his team’s 5-0 humiliation by Liverpool a fortnight ago. It will reveal whether or not we have learned enough.

Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva has predicted that City would go for broke on Saturday and that they will outscore their opponents. Although Guardiola had previously denied that idea in a terse press conference, the midfielder feels City can cause as much damage as Liverpool did at Old Trafford.
