Southampton Inflict Fifth Straight PL Defeat On Aston Villa

Southampton continued their Premier League comeback by defeating Aston Villa for the fifth time in a row thanks to Adam Armstrong’s early strike. Dean Smith’s team is lacking in confidence and got off to a bad start as Matt Cash failed to clear a long ball, resulting in Armstrong slamming in a spectacular first-time effort from 20 yards.

Villa were a mess in the first half, and Southampton should have led by several goals at halftime, while Anwar el Ghazi of the visitors was fortunate to avoid a second booking for a flagrant dive.

Villa, on the other hand, looked like a completely different team in the second half, with El Ghazi and Emiliano Buendia both going close. They also had a good penalty claim denied down after Oriol Romeu yanked Tyrone Mings’ shirt, but they were unable to find a leveller, as Smith’s pressure mounts.

“I have no idea,” he remarked when asked if he will be allowed time to turn Villa’s fortunes around. “I have never had any control over that so I never worry about it. I always concentrate on my job day to day and continue to do that.

“I am very confident if given time that we will turn it around with the squad we have got, and the players we have got coming back [from injury].”

Before everyone else plays this weekend, Southampton moves up to 12th place, while Villa remains three points above the relegation zone.
