Liverpool Brush Atletico Aside To Reach Last 16

With an easy win over 10-man Atletico Madrid, Liverpool surged into the final 16 of the Champions League, ensuring they would finish first in Group B.

Early goals from Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane, both set up by Trent Alexander-Arnold, put the Reds in complete control, and once Felipe was sent off before half-time, there was no way back for the Spanish side.

After the break, Jurgen Klopp’s side could have piled on the pressure, but they squandered a flurry of chances, and Jota’s goal was ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee.

Atletico believed they had equalized when former Reds striker Luis Suarez’s deflected shot was called off for offside by VAR, and they never genuinely attempted a comeback.

The victory not only advances Liverpool to the knockout stage with two games to spare, but it also extends Liverpool’s unbeaten start to the season to 16 games.

They haven’t lost in 25 games, dating back to the 6th of April, when they lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals last season.
