After Villarreal’s Unai Emery turned down Newcastle’s offer, the club will consider making ex-Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe their next manager. Former Arsenal manager Emery and former Newcastle manager Howe were the frontrunners to succeed Steve Bruce, who left by mutual consent two weeks ago.
However, when their first option, Emery, was turned down by the new owners, they would assess the situation before deciding on Howe. For Saturday’s match against Brighton, Graeme Jones could play in an interim position.
Howe has not managed since leaving Bournemouth following the club’s relegation from the Premier League in August 2020.
However, the 43-year-old knows Newcastle players Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser, and Matt Ritchie from his stint as manager of Bournemouth, where he guided the team from League One to the Premier League for five seasons.
