Real Madrid topped Group D with a 2-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League thanks to a double from Karim Benzema. Real Madrid’s 1,000th goal in European football’s top club competition was scored by Benzema.
After Fernando had rightfully leveled for Shakhtar, the France forward swept in his second goal after superb work from Vinicius Junior and Casemiro.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will be grateful for Benzema’s clinical performance in a game that saw his team lie to deceive against opponents they had beaten in the reverse fixture just over two weeks ago.
Alan Patrick, who had earlier hit the post for Roberto de Zerbi’s side, brilliantly chested the ball into Fernando’s path for the equalizer, with the Brazilian forward slamming his attempt past Thibaut Courtois and into the roof of the net.
However, Benzema’s second goal of the evening, which came after a magnificent move, was pivotal for the hosts, who have now won four of their past five matches in all competitions.
