For Winning All Three Fall Tests, England Players Will Be Paid £70,000 Each

The Rugby Football Union and England players have agreed on a new pay structure that will see Eddie Jones’s team earn roughly £70,000 each if they win all three of their autumn internationals. The players would earn at least £23,000 in match fees if they beat Tonga this Saturday, whereas the Pacific Islanders receive just £500 each week.

Due to the financial impact of the pandemic on the union, England players agreed to a 25% salary drop for one season in September, but a new, more performance-related agreement has been reached. The players will earn less than the pre-pandemic match price of about £23,000, but victories over Tonga, Australia, and South Africa will trigger a bonus clause, resulting in the squad earning a comparable sum. Furthermore, if the RFU’s commercial performance exceeds expectations, the players may earn even more.

Even with last season’s pay decrease, England players are the best paid in the world, as seen by comparisons with this weekend’s opponents. As was the case when Samoa visited Twickenham in 2017, the RFU is making a six-figure payment to the Tonga union as a goodwill gesture.

“Player fees for future games have been re-negotiated to include an increased bonus component based on performance,” read an RFU statement.
