Chinese authorities have been accused of “continuously stymying” foreign media attempts to cover the Winter Olympics by denying or disregarding access requests and following, harassing, and abusing journalists.
The Foreign Correspondents Club of China, which represents foreign media in China, issued a harsh statement on Tuesday calling for transparency and clarity from China’s national Olympic organizing body.
The club also charged the committee of violating the International Olympic Committee’s charter, which requires them to provide the most extensive media coverage possible for the largest potential worldwide audience. In February, the Games will be held in Beijing.
“Our members’ repeated inquiries towards [Beijing Organising Committee for the Olympic Games] on how international media can report on the Games have been met with conflicting answers or neglected completely,” the FCCC said.
