Antonio Rüdiger: ‘Tuchel Gave Me New Life – He Told Me What He Expects’

“Alot of people don’t know me,” As he analyzes how impressions of him have altered since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival at Chelsea in January, Antonio Rüdiger comments. This season, Rüdiger has been one of the most exciting players in the Premier League, captivating fans with aggressive defending, explosive runs, and expressive gestures, but he doesn’t feel any differently.“I have always been as I am now,” he continues. “It’s just that things are going well. Obviously everyone has their opinion. I’ve always been the same Toni.”

He admits that his performances were subpar during Lampard’s first season, but he couldn’t figure out why things went wrong last season. He thought he was still a quality defender, and under Tuchel, he proved it by helping Chelsea win the European Cup.

“Tuchel gave me new life,” Rüdiger says. “I wouldn’t say he said: ‘You have to be the biggest speaker in the dressing room.’ I’m not like this. I like to show everything on the pitch. He told me what he expects – my natural game: to be aggressive, to be a leader.”
