Bayern Munich crushed Benfica 4-2 in the final 20 minutes to go five points clear at the top of their Champions League group. Leroy Sane scored two goals, first with a fantastic free-kick and then with a fourth-minute strike.
Bayern’s second goal came after Everton headed a cross into his own net, and Robert Lewandowski added a third. It was disheartening for Benfica, who had forced Manuel Neuer into two brilliant stops earlier in the game.
Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made a quick reaction save to deny Darwin Nunez’s shot before tipping Diogo Goncalves’ effort over the bar.
But Bayern’s floodgates opened after Sane’s superb 70th-minute free-kick, which startled Benfica with its stunning finish. Bayern now leads Group E with three victories from three games.
Benfica is in second place with four points, while Barcelona is in third place with three points after beating bottom-of-the-table Dynamo Kyiv earlier on Wednesday.
