Liverpool made it three wins out of three in the Champions League group stage by defeating Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in a game full of drama. Mohamed Salah continued his excellent form.
The Reds had an early two-goal advantage wiped out by Antoine Griezmann’s double in a frenzied, spectacular contest in the Spanish capital between sides who were dazzling in attack but vulnerable at the defense.
Salah’s well-taken penalty, awarded for a reckless shove on Diogo Jota by Mario Hermoso, allowed the visitors to reclaim their influence and secure a significant win through Salah’s well-taken penalty early in the second half.
However, Jota came close to being the villain when his challenge on Jose Maria Gimenez resulted in a penalty, only for the referee to reverse his decision after being persuaded by VAR to see the event on the pitchside monitor.
Salah had given the Reds the lead earlier in the game when his low finish off the toe of James Milner hit the net, before Naby Keita’s spectacular volley doubled the visitors’ advantage. Before the break, Griezmann’s crisp close-range goal and brilliant turn and strike across Alisson restored parity.
