An alleged racist gesture made by a person to Tottenham fans during Sunday’s Premier League game at Newcastle United is being investigated by police. Spurs triumphed 3-2 in Newcastle’s first game after the club was taken over.

“An investigation is ongoing, and the police have been notified,” the Magpies stated in a statement. “Discrimination has no place in football, on the street, online, or in society at large, and we will not tolerate it under any circumstances.”

“Anyone implicated in discriminatory behavior will face the toughest possible punishment,” the club said, adding that they “would assist any efforts by the authorities to win a criminal conviction.”

“We can confirm we are investigating an alleged racist incident during Newcastle United’s home match against Tottenham at St James’ Park on Sunday,” a Northumbria Police spokeswoman said. “Enquiries are ongoing with the club to identify anyone involved and ascertain whether criminal offences have been committed.”
