Unvaccinated tennis players and other athletes are unlikely to be granted visas to enter Australia, according to Victoria’s premier Daniel Andrew, casting doubt on Novak Djokovic’s chances of defending his Australian Open title and attempting to break the grand slam record.
Novak Djokovic, who shares 20 grand slam wins with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, declined to announce his vaccination status again this week, saying he was unsure if he would defend his title at Melbourne Park while authorities sort out Covid-19 limits.
Andrews believes that no unvaccinated athletes will be permitted into the nation, particularly in Victoria, which holds the Australian Open in Melbourne.
“I don’t think an unvaccinated tennis player is going to get a visa to come into this country and if they did get a visa they’d probably have to quarantine for a couple of weeks,” Andrews said.
