Tottenham defeated Newcastle 3-2 in their debut game under new ownership, with Harry Kane scoring his first Premier League goal of the season.
The Newcastle fans welcomed their new owners into the directors’ box with a festival atmosphere before kick-off. On the field, it started off brightly, with Callum Wilson nodding home inside two minutes, sending the crowd into raptures.
Things rapidly unraveled, however, as Tottenham took the lead. Before Kane (22) scored his first Premier League goal of the season, Tanguy Ndombele (17) curled in a fantastic equalize. His goal was first disallowed due to offside, but the decision was overturned after a VAR review, and the goal was allowed to stand.
Tottenham got a third goal. Kane and Heung-Min Son (45+4) connected up for the first time since February, with the South Korean forward tapping home to close the gap on Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba’s Premier League combined goals record.
Jonjo Shelvey (83) was sent off for two yellow cards 23 minutes after coming on as a substitute, reducing Newcastle to ten men late in the second half. Newcastle had a glimmer of hope after Eric Dier’s devastating own goal (89), but Tottenham were able to see the game out.
