Andrea Radrizzani, Leeds Owner Calls For Financial Fair Play Laws To Be Enforced Following Newcastle United Takeover

Financial Fair Play laws must be enforced around the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle United, according to Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani, to guarantee that all 20 Premier League teams are “playing the same game.”

After getting “legally enforceable assurances” that the Saudi Arabian state would not control Newcastle, the Premier League authorized the £305 million takeover last week.

Instead, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), which provided 80% of the deal’s funding, is viewed as a separate entity from the state.

Despite the fact that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, is named as the PIF’s chair, this is not the case.

“If the rule allows the sovereign fund to buy the club, that is totally fine,” said Radrizzani, speaking at the FT Business of Sport US Summit.

“It is more about how to regulate Financial Fair Play in the Premier League to maintain competitiveness and fair play for everybody.”

Financial Fair Play laws are in place in both Europe’s governing body, Uefa, and the Premier League to prevent teams from spending above their means.
