On Tuesday night, images of Hungary fans battling with riot police at Wembley Stadium were frightening, but not surprising.

It is far from the first time that scenes have gotten ugly on the world stage in recent years, with the worst offenders receiving repeated fines.

March 25, 2019 – Montenegro v England
Danny Rose, Raheem Sterling and Callum Hudson-Odoi were targeted by groups of home fans.

Sanction: Montenegro fined £16,975 by UEFA for racist abuse and ordered to play one match behind closed doors.

September 7, 2019 – Serbia v Portugal
UEFA charged the Serbian FA with six offences, including racist behaviour, illicit chants and pitch invasions.

Sanction: UEFA ruled Serbia must play their next game behind closed doors and fined the Serbia FA £28,229.
